Status of the proposed European Light Aircraft certification processes for airplanes with a mass below 1000 kg, respective below 2000 kg (February 2009)

What is ELA?

A new, simplified European certification process for

1. non-complex piston-engine aeroplanes of a maximum weight of less then 2000 kg, very light rotorcraft, motor gliders, sailplanes, airships, and balloons of limited gas or hot air capacity.
2. Light Sport Aircraft (FAA, USA) 

Why is it being introduced?

To reduce certification costs for the light aircraft listed above and to allow operation of EASA-certified Light Sport Aircraft in Europe.
